Hendrik van Oordt (1710-1805) is the founder of van Oordt and descendant of wealthy merchants. His company refined cane sugar imported by the Dutch East India Company. The first application for a sugar refinery in Rotterdam dates from 1734. Followed by a second located at the “Boompjes” in a former brewery “Het Witte Hart” (The White Heart). Upto today, this symbol is still part of our logo. In 1835 Van Oordt owned five sugar refineries.
In 1927 Henry began with the automated packing of sugar in sachets. Portion packs of sugar are born; a first in the Netherlands. After a while the sugar sachets are a common product. Not only because it's useful and economical. But also because it is a valuable addition to the presentation of a cup of coffee or tea. Even more if you print it with a brand or a logo.
Over the years the company specializes more and more in the field of portions packs. For instance bread spreads, condiments and spices. But also non-food such as guest supplies. In 1993, Van Oordt developes the sugar stick. In comparison with the sugar sachet it amounts to a reduction of 45% of packaging material and the product conquers the market rapidly. Nowadays Van Oordt sells about five billion portion packs per year to a wide range of customers. From restaurants, caterers, hospitals and coffee roasters to airlines and cruise ships.
Van Oordt has two sites in the Netherlands. One in Landgraaf and one in Oud-Beijerland. The latter is also the home-town of the head office of PortionPack Europe Holding, a joint venture of specialists in the field of portions packs, that operates under the wings of European sugar market leader Südzucker. Within this holding Van Oordt is accompanied by PortionPack Belgium, Hellma Germany, Hellma Czech Republic, Hellma Poland, Hellma Austria, Single Source UK & Ireland and PortionPack Iberia (SAES). Eight companies originating from eight countries. And the benefits of the joint forces? Areas of expertise that complement each other. Know-how that comes together. The greater efficiency and the substantial economies of scale.
Every day Van Oordt produces many thousands portion packs. It has everything to do with our sincere belief in the added value: hygiene, efficiency, convenience, communication and experience. Hygiene because the closed packaging are made for single and individual use. Efficiency because you save time and waste less product by spoilage or messing. Convenience because of the perfect dosage, ready-to-use function and the many possibilities to vary without loss. Quality; a legal requirement. And from a food safety perspective it’s a must. Customers often have their own specific requirements and we are also dedicated to the highest level. Consequently our quality management system has IFS certification. We are IFS higher level certified. We also have Skal certification, enabling us to use the European market for organic products. And the same goes for fairtrade products with the certified Fairtrade/Max Havelaar label. Below, all four certificates can be downloaded. Furhermore we are commited to the Südzucker compliance corporate principles.
We can trace all of our 20,000 references, for instance raw materials, packaging materials and finished products, in every phase of the production process. From procurement to delivery. We can manage this among other things thanks to the fully integrated scanning system. Furthermore we review every aspect that is relevant to quality. This implies risk analysis, product and process management, training. Certification authorities and external auditors carry out regular controls, like our own auditors, hygiene inspectors and product analysts. All in all, quality is an on-going concern. Also at Van Oordt.
We want to provide portion packs for one-time and individually use for all food moments at home and outdoors. Everyone comes acrosss our products regularly, probably often unconscious. Chain integration, raw materials & packaging
This centres on our roll as purchaser. It is important to build long-term relationships with suppliers and to commit to sustainable solutions. We also pay attention to the CSR of our partners. In regard to materials, we are currently developing the use of biodegradable packaging, and use recycled paper and boxes wherever possible. Currently 80% of cartons purchased are from recycled materials. Furthermore, Van Oordt is working on a wide range of biological and Fair-Trade products. Organic & Fairtrade sugar has been part of our standard assortment for 3 years. Thanks to our partnership with Fair Trade Original, Van Oordt has introduced the first complete range of Fairtrade spreads in the foodservice industry. And we have more planned – organic apple sauces and Fairtrade coffee supplies for instance.
Energy, water, waste & CO2 emissions
As a manufacturer, we are committed to treating the environment responsibly. We monitor our energy use via an energy scan and make improvements where necessary. We are currently making the transition to LED lighting to reduce energy consumption, and warm air (released during production), is recycled. We strive to reduce waste and therefore monitor it on a regular basis, and we also perform waste separation. In our printing office we use only water-based ink, without solvent.
Transport & logistics optimization
Logistics plays an important part in our roll as distributor. We therefore work closely with a local logistical forwarder to realise reduced fuel consumption, increased load, more stops during transportation and so on.
Personnel & Organisation
Both the company and its employees are committed to making a difference and behaving responsibly, particularly when it comes to durability. Everything from large-scale organisation to smaller initiatives is significant. Subsequently, our IT department collects the ink cartridges, our Marketing Department monitors the use of FCS paper concerning laminate, and our Graphic Department regenerates the solvents used in the development of Flexo printing plates. In a broader sense, we strive to create an enjoyable working place for our employees, and to support them in their own development.
